Choosing care

Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Therapist or Counsellor: Who Should You See in Nepal?

People in Kathmandu often search for a "therapist", "psychologist" or "psychiatrist" without knowing how they differ. The words are used loosely, so it helps to know who does what and where to start.

Key takeaways

  • A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose, prescribe medicine and provide therapy.
  • Psychologists and counsellors provide talk therapy and assessment but do not prescribe medicine.
  • "Therapist" is a general word, so ask about training and the type of therapy offered.
  • If you are unsure, a first consultation with a psychiatrist can help decide who you need.

Who should you start with?

  • Start with a psychiatrist if you have low mood that will not lift, panic attacks, severe anxiety, OCD, sleep loss, hearing voices or unusual beliefs, addiction, or if you think you may need medicine.
  • A psychologist or counsellor may be enough for everyday stress, relationship problems, grief or building coping skills, particularly if symptoms are mild.
  • Both together is common: the psychiatrist manages diagnosis and medicine while therapy builds skills.

How to choose a therapist or psychologist

Ask about their training, the type of therapy they use (for example cognitive behavioural therapy, CBT), and their experience with your concern, whether that is anxiety, OCD, trauma or a child's difficulty. You should feel heard and comfortable. Many people prefer a doctor or therapist of a particular gender, and it is fine to ask for that.

How we work

Our doctors are psychiatrists who also provide CBT and supportive counselling, so you can receive medical assessment and talk therapy in the same place. If a specialised therapy would suit you better, we can refer you to a clinical psychologist. See our services for the full list.

Frequently asked questions

No. Only a medical doctor, such as a psychiatrist, can prescribe medicine.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Nepal?

No. You can book directly. Doctors, schools and counsellors are welcome to refer, but a letter is not required.

Can I see a psychiatrist and a therapist at the same time?

Yes. Many people do, and the two roles work well together.
