OCD

OCD Treatment in Kathmandu: Symptoms, Therapy and Medicine

Repeated hand washing, checking the door again and again, or thoughts you cannot switch off are common reasons people look for an OCD therapist in Kathmandu. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a treatable condition, and good treatment can give you your time and peace of mind back.

Key takeaways

  • OCD involves unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repeated actions or mental rituals (compulsions).
  • It is not about being neat or careful. It is distressing and time-consuming.
  • The most effective therapy is CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP), often with medicine.
  • Early treatment works better, and family support helps.

What OCD is, and what it is not

Obsessions are unwanted thoughts, images or urges that cause anxiety, such as fear of germs or a worry that you left the gas on (in Nepali: अनावश्यक विचार आउने समस्या). Compulsions are actions or mental acts you feel driven to repeat to reduce that anxiety, such as washing (बारम्बार हात धुने बानी), checking, counting or seeking reassurance. OCD is not perfectionism or a quirk. It consumes hours and gets in the way of life.

Common forms of OCD

  • Contamination and washing.
  • Checking (locks, appliances, switches).
  • Order, symmetry and "just right" feelings.
  • Intrusive thoughts about harm, religion or sex that are unwanted and feel shameful.
  • Hoarding, and repeating or counting rituals.

How OCD is diagnosed

A psychiatrist asks about your thoughts, rituals, how much time they take and how they affect life, and checks for related problems such as anxiety, depression or tics. There is no lab test. What you say stays confidential, and intrusive thoughts do not mean you will act on them.

Treatment: exposure and response prevention (ERP)

ERP is a form of CBT. Step by step, with support, you face the thing that triggers your fear without performing the ritual, and learn that the anxiety fades on its own. It is hard work, and it is the treatment with the strongest evidence for OCD.

Medicine

Antidepressant-type medicines (SSRIs) are commonly used for OCD. OCD often needs higher doses than depression and more time, typically up to eight to twelve weeks, to work. Medicine and ERP together help many people more than either alone. Do not stop tablets suddenly.

How families can help

Try not to take part in rituals or give repeated reassurance, which feeds OCD. Instead, be kind and steady, encourage treatment, and celebrate small steps. Families are welcome to attend sessions with the patient's consent.

Finding an OCD therapist

Ask whether the therapist or doctor uses ERP and has experience treating OCD. Our doctors treat OCD with CBT and medicine where needed. See our OCD services or book a consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is OCD curable?

OCD is a long-term condition for many people, but treatment brings large improvement, and many people live full lives with few symptoms. Some become symptom-free.

Do intrusive thoughts mean I am dangerous?

No. Unwanted, disturbing thoughts are a feature of OCD, and people with OCD are usually very careful and would never act on them. The distress is a sign of how much you dislike them.

How long does OCD treatment take?

Therapy often takes several months of regular sessions, and medicine can take up to three months to reach full effect. Your doctor reviews progress regularly.
